Senior Care in Mountainside NJ

On January 8th, Americans are encouraged to spread awareness about the problem of poverty in this country.  While a prosperous nation, the United States is still home to many who go hungry, Senior-Care-Mountainside-NJ are homeless, or don’t have the means to support themselves and their families.  For this reason, National War on Poverty Day is observed to inspire American’s to help their neighbors in need.  For seniors wishing to give back and to make a difference in their communities, January 8th is a great day to start helping fight poverty.  Here are just a few ways seniors can get involved in helping those in need.

Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen or Homeless Shelter

Places like soup kitchens and homeless shelters are always in need of caring volunteers to help keep their organizations operating.  Many times, these great organizations have small budgets and depend on the help of volunteers.  Seniors can help out with food preparation, administrative tasks, and simply providing a listening ear to the people who are there.  Volunteering can be a rewarding experience for seniors that can also impact the lives of others in a positive way.

Donate

Cut down on clutter in your home while also providing a person in need with necessities by donating gently used clothing, furniture, housewares, and shoes to a local thrift store.  These organizations will resell your items at prices that those in poverty are more likely to be able to afford.  The money that the thrift store makes is also often used to help those in need.

Get Others Involved

If you plan on donating items or volunteering this January, let friends and family members know about your plans.  Invite friends to come along when you volunteer or help family members gather up items from their home to donate, as well.

Think Beyond January 8th

Poverty isn’t an issue just one day a year, but every day.  If volunteering is something you enjoy, vow to do it regularly.  Helping your community to fight poverty in the long-term is an excellent way to honor the National War on Poverty.
