Is It Best to Move Your Family Closer to Your Mom After Her Stroke?

May 31, 2022 by Robert D'Arienzo

Your mom had a stroke. As her only child, you need to decide what to do next. She’s in rehabilitation now, but her doctors tell you that she will need a wheelchair for now and a walker if she recovers enough. She’ll have limited use of her left side. In addition to dealing with mobility issues, your mom’s speech is affected. She’s struggling to communicate. When she does come home, she needs help, such as home care services, with most of her activities of daily living. What are you going to do now?

You imagine that it would be much easier to move your mom into your house, but that means a cross-country move that she refuses to do. She’s scared of leaving her life behind and moving to an unfamiliar area.

If you pick up and move to the family home, you have to leave your job, your friends, and uproot your children. None of you want that. What are your other options?

Have you considered home care services? You stay where you are. Your mom stays in her familiar home and environment. But, you both have peace of mind as she is supported by caregivers.

What Can Home Care Aides Help Her Do?

Take a look at what your mom can and cannot do now. If she’s unable to use her left side, she won’t be able to hold cutlery in that hand. That can impact cooking meals, oral care, grooming, and eating.

Your mom isn’t allowed to drive now. To get to follow-up appointments, she needs someone who can help her get into the passenger seat, drive her to the medical office, and help her get checked in. After the appointment, her caregiver can drive her home, too.

She’s going to find it difficult to move from her bed without help. Your mom needs help getting from her wheelchair into the shower and back. She’s going to need help getting her mail, in and out of cars, and reaching items in upper cabinets.

With home care services, your mom has someone to prepare meals and snacks and help her eat them. She has caregivers to change her sheets and towels, launder them, and put them away. Your mom’s home care aides vacuum, dust, and wash dishes.

It’s also very likely that your mom will not be able to take a shower on her own. She’ll need someone to shampoo and condition her hair. She cannot dry or style her hair when she can’t use her left hand.

When she uses the toilet, she needs help sitting down on the toilet and standing back up. Your mom also needs help cleaning up after she goes to the bathroom. Caregivers help with all of these daily tasks.
