Best Way for Seniors to Reduce Hospital Readmission Risk

The best way for seniors to avoid hospital readmission is to follow their doctor’s advice, stay on top of their recovery, and realize that the advice is in their best interest.

Let’s face it, not all of us want to do what people tell us. Okay, if we are being honest, the vast majority of us have no desire to be told what to do, not now and not at any other point in our lives. Now, as far as aging seniors are concerned, they may be facing several challenges in life and receiving assistance from senior home care providers. They might have their spouse, a brother or sister, close friends, adult children, and maybe even grandchildren who are all trying to tell them what they should or shouldn’t do, can or can’t do, and it gets tiring.

As adults, we want to live our life on our terms. We don’t want somebody else dictating what we should or shouldn’t do, not unless it’s an employer, somebody who is giving us money for the work we provide. In that case, we will follow certain rules and expectations.

When you think about it, every day we go out of our house, we have to follow the rules. Even in our own homes, we have to follow the law. We may not want to all the time, but there are usually consequences that we don’t want to deal with that could land us in jail.

After a while, a person can become numb to life. They can become numb to the way other people care or the way other people think caring is all about.

So, if that person finds himself or herself in the hospital following a major medical emergency, like a heart attack or stroke or maybe even an aneurysm or major surgery, they are going to hear even more consternation, firmness, and admonitions about the things they should or shouldn’t do and how to recover best.

What do they risk if they don’t follow the right advice?

When a person is hospitalized, eventually they will (hopefully) be set for discharge. They might have to go to a nursing home first, but eventually, they will return home. Their doctor and the hospital may offer a wide range of instructions.

They might have to go to physical therapy. They may have to take a new slew of prescription medications. They might have to avoid certain activities. They might have to check their vitals and have a visiting nurse do it for them. Their senior home care providers can assist them with activities.

They may have to exercise, doing activities they’ve never done before, or at least not in decades. If they don’t follow the right advice, if they neglect senior home care and try to do everything on their own, they could find themselves readmitted to the hospital.

The best way for seniors to avoid hospital readmission is to follow their doctor’s advice, stay on top of their recovery, and realize that the advice and recommendations from the doctor are meant for their benefit, in the process they may realize that exactly what’s happening with all of the other advice people give them.
