They should understand what the anticipated temperature is going to be, including the relative humidity. If the humidity is going to be excessive, that can make the outdoor temperature feel five, 10, and even 20° warmer than it actually is. So, for example, on a day when the exterior temperature is going to be 85°, as forecasted by meteorologists, and the humidity is expected to be in the 60th percentile, that can make it feel like 95° or even 100°.
Tip #2: Dress in layers.
Seniors will not have the same capability to adjust to various temperatures as they did in their younger years. They may not sweat the same as in their youth. Their body might not be able to keep cool, or even warm when it’s cooler out. If they are going out in the morning, they should dress in layers that can be easily removed as the day wears on and then put back on if they continue to remain outdoors when the temperature begins to drop.
Keep in mind that through the latter half of spring and summer months, the peak temperature will usually arrive around 2 PM and remain at that high temperature until around 5 PM, after which it will begin to decline.
Tip #3: Keep hydrated.
Always bring more than enough water for the senior as well as any caregivers or others with them so that everyone can remain hydrated properly. Every person should drink at least eight glasses of water (8 ounces each) per day. The warmer the temperature is outside, the more fluid they will need to drink to stay properly hydrated.
If the senior drinks coffee, they will need to drink more water to maintain proper hydration.
Tip #4: Pay close attention to any physical symptoms of dehydration or other problems with the senior.
If the senior is showing signs of fatigue, confusion, lightheadedness, or any other symptom that is not considered “normal,” it’s time to seek shelter, get them hydrated, and possibly contact emergency services for assistance. Evaluate their condition on a regular basis, usually at least every 30 minutes or more frequently during extremely warm days.
